25 Years of Storage

Nice! I still have a couple of 8" floppy disks that were used on PDP-11 machines in the early 1980's. I got them from a guy who attended UCSD at that time. Most people have never used them since they didn't make it to the PC era. They look just like the 5.25" floppy disks in your pic, but they're 8"x8" wide.

I still have some Microsoft Windows 1.0 360KB floppy disks in a box somewhere. There were 5 of them. :)

Here's another twist on memory storage over the last 30 years...

The first PC's came equipped with 128KB of RAM and a 360K floppy disk, two of them if you upgraded.

Today, my Android phone (Galaxy S3) has 1.6 GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

For reference, 1.6 GB of RAM = 1,677,721 KB ... compare that number to the 128KB in the original PC's,

My phone has 13107 times more memory than the original PC had! :o :D

First, I hate to be an immature 12 year old, but I laughed hard at that statement, I bet you enjoyed handling those 8.5 inch floppies ;) (you asked for it)

Second, Oregon Trail is the best game ever made, at least when I was 8. I even downloaded a free version of it for my iPad a couple months ago to bring back glorious memories. Oh to be young...

I'm pretty sure the only thing I did on Oregon Trail back in elementary was hunt.

Yeah all I really cared about. Don't think I ever actually competed the game.

lol. I remember we only had two computers in our class, and the first ones finished got to play in free time, (basically the first two got the computer lol). So it was a mad race every day to finish first. Everyone that didnt get to play would just stand around and watch. Oregon trail and snake was all we played in class or the computer lab. I would hunt until the game would tell me I have too much weight to carry and would have to start throwing away meat.

Nice picture. I remember one of the first internet memes was a cat reaching around a computer screen to touch his owner's hand touching a floppy disk as he is pressing it in. The caption was "DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY!"

Man I'm old.
