Dedicated sound card for CS:GO?

I really, really, reaaaallllllyyyy miss being able to know exactly where a footstep was coming from in CS:GO like I could in CS and CS:S.... I know other people complain about this too but when I say I can *rarely* hear which direction they are from, I mean it's like 20% of the time I can hear what direction.... That's a horrible percentage. I usually hear a footstep, and use my judgement from how that round is playing out to make a quick judgement call on where the footstep most likely came from.

Do you guys think a dedicated sound card will fix this issue? I have the same headphones I used in CS:S so it's not that, either.

Yes! How much dough do you have to throw at it?

Hmmm.. I mean I got 100 bucks but I'm kinda hesitant to throw that towards a sound card when all I'm going to use it for is music (And I have shitty PC speakers so don't need it to be fancy for that) and CS\Gaming.... Which I use headphones for. Is there a cheaper alternative that still would be great for gaming and offer the correct surround sound for footsteps?

Quite a lot of people have had issues with the walking sounds in GO basically since the game's launched. It's been patched and fixed a little bit, footsteps were almost inaudible at beta launch, but still kinda annoying.

I don't have a dedicated sound card, but I do have a pretty nice 7.1 headset that allows me to hear things pretty well. Granted, GO only allows up to 5.1 sound, but whatever. If you have a headset with software, I'd mess around with the equalizer first. Some gaming headsets in specific allow you to set profiles for each game in order to get the best performance out of it. So, see if you can change that a bit and get the footsteps to sound a bit clearer and more crisp.

As for if you have speakers, best of luck. I'm trash at picking out sounds without my headset on.

Agree with Timm. I have a Creative Fatal1ty Pro (remember it's a 5 year old rig) that I could hear perfectly where footsteps came from in CS 1.6 and CS:S. I still have trouble with figuring out footsteps in CS:GO. So I don't think a dedicated card will help as much as you think it would (or as it should) until CS:GO REALLY fixes the problem.

I have trouble with footsteps too sometimes. Some times I can hear them great and know exactly where someone is, other times I hear the steps in on side of my headset and the person's in the other direction. I've got a Creative Labs Audigy X-Fi 5.1 plat. I think it's just the game being buggy.

The sound mechanics in CS:GO are pure shit. dropping money into a boosted sound system will help somewhat, but it will not help with the positional accuracy of your sound like you want it to, this is no CS or CS:S

you're never gonna be able to hear one teeny tiny footstep and be like hes "HES LOCATED AT X/Y LOCATION +/-10mm" like in CS 1.6, it would be nice though

I'm planning to get the new Sound Blaster Z sound card soon, just waiting for reviews of the ZX and ZXR versions first (they come out in January). The big thing is that the Z series card has a headphone amp built in so it will help. What type of headset do you have? There are some true 5.1 headsets out there. I just bought the sennheiser PC360 headset which is not 5.1 but it is very good and much clearer and the mic is clearer and doesnt pick up all kinds of noise in the room.

I know for me it is not that bad I can pretty much tell exactly where people are at in game, using ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1. I don't know if it was entirely worth the money because you have to have a sound system to back it up but I can tell you I can hear the bomb being planted at B from long A on dust2.

  • 1 month later...

it's not so much about a particular sound card but about technology used. as for earphones there are 2 major binaural "3d sound" techs: dolby digital headphone and creative's cmss 3d. I do not know how cs:go sounds on ddh but switching on the cmss made AMAZING difference. U have to set windows' speaker configuration to 7.1 or 5.1 AND set soundcard to cmss earphone. I've read that depending on your head and ears size/shape one or another system may suit you better (each algorithm uses different "head/ears computational model" to transform the fed-in sounds)...
I believe that at least 90% of 3d scene quality is the direct result of one of these 2 technologies, so it's silly to spend money for extremely dear sound cards in hope of better 3d representation. Of course U may get clearer/richer/deeper/more-detailed sound depending on dacs, amps, etc. But "audio guts" of a particular sound card shouldn't affect 3d sound positioning at all (or almost at all).
